In short, pretty much every project I am working on is leading edge, this is just the nature of working at STFC though.
I work on a project called MICE. This stands for Muon Ionisation Cooling Experiment. The experiment itself is a proof of concept for future experiments on the scale of the LHC @ CERN. It is a particle physics experiment and involves a huge mix of institutions from all over the globe! We are developing and using leading technology throughout all areas of the experiment from the numerous superconducting magnets being used to the particle physics diagnostics. All of these different areas must work seamlessly together which is a bigger challenge than you might expect.
I am also working on a project in collaboration with CERN to research and develop technologies used to join superconducting wires together.
The third project I am working on aims to develop techniques of making very fine tungsten powder flow like a liquid while in a dense phase. This would be used for future targets in synchrotrons.
