• Question: oh got a question. have you ever been injured whist in the progress of assembling machines or drilling

      ha !
      Yep, only slightly.
      Never while drilling, or using/making machines though, most of my “paper cut” type injuries have been while doing simple tasks. like the screwdriver slipping when fitting a plug ( 2 weeks ago ) just a scratch.
      Did fall down some steps, just bruised. – on my way to safety talk ! ironic –
      Did see a really nasty injury when a guy I know fell over on the path + cut his head open. gooooey.
      It’s the silly thing that get you. As an engineer you are trained to use safety guards, and safe ways of working. the simple walk to lunch however can be deadly, as you are relaxed, and focussed on food ! so you don’t see the hazard until too late.
      We have all sorts of things to make life safe, and have a duty under the LAW to report anyone doing anything dangerous to our safety staff.

      I have been very lucky that I haven’t. The railways have many systems in place to protect you but also a culture that you all look out for yourselves and others. We are told that if you aren’t sure that you can carry out a task, don’t do it and consult your manager who will be happy to give you additional tools or people to complete the task.

      Often the more dangerous a job is, the less risk you have of actually being hurt because of the amount of focus on safety for it. Trips and falls really are the most common injury. Having said that I have had a few injuries and a close call or two. I cut my thumb quite badly while assembling some lab furniture once, there was quite a lot of blood and a trip to A+E. The scariest near miss I have had was using a milling machine with a slitting saw which is a thin spinning disk with cutting teeth around the edge. It exploded into a load of small and large fragments and I was very lucky to not be hurt. It made a really big bang and I am very grateful that all of the safety guards were in place…we never found all of the fragments but I kept the ones we did find in my tool box as a reminder. I’ll post a photo on my profile later in the week if you’re interested.

      i dont generally work with machinery so i havent had any injuries in this field. sorry

      I have a had a few years of experience in working on various machinery. I always made sure that I have followed all safety procedures and so far I have never had a single incident.
