      Hi,
      Yes, I have done that.
If you go through one of many large airports, you’ll see a red scanner in the security area. That machine checks for liquid explosives, or other nasty things that could be in a bottle. That machine was invented here, I only palyed a small part, working on the safety systems in the room where the test units were developed.
so that’s one thing that will make air travel safer Worldwide. ( look up Cobalt Light systems )
      Or,
a new thing we are working on is a quick + easy way to see if someone has cancer. without undressing the patient, or using x-rays, or taking samples. That device is in delevopment, so assuming ti goes well, that would make routine tests “nicer” than the current methods
      and finally,
We are also looking to build a nuclear fusion power station. so you could generate power from elements you find in sea water….
So yeah, things I work on could help make a huge difference to the Worlds population in a good way.

      Hi Tom,

Yes! working at STFC one of the most important things about the projects we do is whether they will benefit the UK and the world. I have worked on projects with CERN (pretty world changing) although the part I have played is small it is still a part.
You could argue that working on any project with STFC is going to be a benefit to society.

I would say I do everyday however, I would like to make a larger impact on the world than I currently am. There are so many ways that you can make an impact but I would like to progress onto making bigger decisions for the benefit of the world.

The project now involves creating new methods of construction on the railway and to increase efficiency of all infrastructure throughout the world.

Whilst working for local government and a local urban regeneration company i wouldn’t say that the things we do would change the world but the definitely enhance the world of the people of Glasgow and South Lanarkshire.

      thanks
